The Independent Woman Experience Series: Building Self-Discipline and Hope After Health Challenges

Jan Raeder is a nationally ranked martial artist, but she had to give it up when multiple health challenges came her way. She grieved the loss of her passion, but she also learned that self-discipline and helping others on their wellness journeys gave her a new purpose in life.

Jan’s Takeaways:

  • Jan noticed she went through the five stages of grief after she was physically injured. It’s ok to grieve your way of life.

  • Self-discipline is a skill that will help you during difficult times.

  • Our healthcare system is reactive rather than proactive. Focus on keeping yourself healthy and strong instead of just taking care of yourself when you’re injured.

  • Pushing through difficult moments and reaching a goal is euphoric.

  • When life shakes your stability, try to sit with those feelings and explore them. You never know what you’ll learn about yourself and what you want.

  • Shift the “me” to “we.” When you help others, your focus shifts from your own problems to others, and you'll probably be much happier!
